The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Open Enrollment period is the one time each year when nearly everyone under age 65 can sign up for Marketplace health coverage or make changes to their plan. With new rules coming in 2026, it’s more important than ever to stay on top of deadlines and understand your options.
Key Dates for ACA Open Enrollment 2026
Start Date: November 1, 2025
End Date: January 15, 2026
Coverage Start:
Enroll by December 15, 2025 → coverage begins January 1, 2026
Enroll between December 16, 2025 – January 15, 2026 → coverage begins February 1, 2026
👉 Missing these dates usually means waiting until the next Open Enrollment unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
Why Open Enrollment Matters
It’s your chance to switch plans if your needs or budget have changed.
You can see if you qualify for new subsidies that lower your monthly premium.
It’s the time to review networks and prescriptions to ensure your doctors and medications are covered for 2026.
What’s Changing in 2026
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) brings major Marketplace changes starting January 1, 2026:
CMS is working to phase out passive enrollments
To help protect consumers, CMS is moving toward eliminating passive (automatic) re-enrollments.
Starting in 2026, individuals whose plans would otherwise auto-renew with a $0 premium will instead face a $5 monthly charge—unless they actively re-confirm their eligibility. This is CMS’s way of discouraging passive enrollments.
This means all consumers will need to actively update their information and select a plan each year—either in the Marketplace or with the help of a licensed agent like me.
Full repayment of subsidies at tax time
Today, if you underestimate your income causing you to receive a larger subsidy than you should, there’s a cap on how much of the extra subsidy you must repay.
Beginning in 2026, that cap goes away. You’ll have to pay back the entire amount of any overpaid subsidy.
No subsidies with certain income-based Special Enrollment Periods
If you qualify for coverage outside Open Enrollment using an income-based SEP, you will no longer receive premium subsidies.
This makes it even more important to enroll during Open Enrollment or use a different type of qualifying life event if possible.
How to Prepare for Enrollment
Review your income estimate: Try to be as accurate as possible with your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) — this is your adjusted gross income (AGI) plus certain deductions added back in, like tax-exempt Social Security, non-taxable interest, and foreign earned income. Using the right number helps avoid a surprise tax bill.
Gather documents: You’ll need Social Security numbers, income information, and current policy details.
Compare plans carefully: Look at premiums, deductibles, drug coverage, and provider networks.
Check subsidies early: Use the Marketplace calculator or work with a licensed agent to see what financial help you qualify for.
